Valeri Grigoryevich Kikta (Валерий Григорьевич Кикта) was born in Vladmirovka (Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine). He was educated at the Moscow Choral College, then at the Moscow Conservatory under Semyon Bogatyryov and Tikhon Khrennikov. On recommendation of Shostakovich, he moved on to post-graduate study. Kiktas compositions include ballets, symphonic, organ and choral works. Particularly remarkable are Beyond the Verge of Darkness for tenor and orchestra, and Frescos of St. Sofia Cathedral in Kiev for harp and orchestra. He was recorded extensively by the U.S.S.R. state recording company, Melodiya, in the 1970s and 1980s. Kikta composed the First Organ Suite Organ Frescos in 1966.
