Vanilla Absolute and A Solid Perfume Made Using Vanilla Absolute ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Vanilla absolute should not be confused with vanilla extract. Vanilla extract is a product made for flavoring food, while vanilla absolute is a much stronger, thicker substance that is used in aromatherapy and the perfume industry. Vanilla absolute is vanilla in its most concentrated form and has a rich, warm, sweet, traditional vanilla odor. For that reason, it is frequently used as a base note or fixative in the fragrance industry. It blends well with a variety of other fragrances and many essential oils. Other essential oils it blends well with include benzoin, bergamot, frankincense, grapefruit, jasmine, lemon, sweet orange (for kind of a “creamsicle” scent!), patchouli, rose, sandalwood, vetiver and ylang ylang. Its therapeutic action in aromatherapy is that it lifts mood, calms and relaxes nerves, comforts and eases depression and soothes feelings of anger and stress. It is also believed to be an aphrodisiac and to aid sleep. The oil is very thick and may need to be warmed to aid pourability. Please remember that it is a natural product and as such, its texture can vary. It is best to treat natural vanillaabsolute like you would treat honey – if it gets thick, “balls up” or separates, just heat it gently to restore it to a pourable state. Please do not microwave it. Instead, placing it in a container of warm water which you have heated in the microwave should work well. Vanilla absolute is a thick, dark brown oil which can be diluted in a carrier oil if you wish. Please do not be surprised when there is a small amount of residue on the bottom of a bottle. It should blend back in to the rest of the vanilla absolute with shaking. Finally, as this product is very thick and strong, please avoid putting it in direct contact with rubber, plastic, aluminum bottles, finished surfaces (varnished wood, for instance) or human skin in its undiluted state. It is best stored in glass, although it can be packaged in plastic containers once it is in its diluted state in a finished product. You will only need a tiny amount to scent your product, as this is a very nice, strong natural product. Here is a recipe for solid perfume with vanilla absolute: Ingredients - 4 tablespoons grated, packed beeswax 4 tablespoons jojoba 20-25 drops sandalwood essential oil 20 drops vanilla absolute (use up to 30 drops if diluted in a carrier oil) 20-25 drops grapefruit essential oil 15-20 drops bergamot essential oil 10 drops T-50 or other oil-based antioxidant Instructions - Melt beeswax in the top of a double boiler over low heat, or in a Pyrex container heated slowly in a pan of hot water on the stovetop. Once the beeswax is fully melted, stir in the jojoba. Remove container from the stove top as soon as the wax and oil are thoroughly blended. The mixture should be just warm at this point. Allow to cool as close to room temperature as possible to avoid damage to the essential oils by the heat. When beeswax/jojoba mixture is as close to room temperature as possible but still liquid enough to be stirred, add in essential oils, then stir in antioxidant. Pour into lockets, tins, small glass wide mouthed jars with tight-fitting lids, or whatever other container you desire. Shelf Life Up to 24 months if using jojoba as the oil - less so if you substitute in another oil with a shorter shelf life. . Store in a tightly closed container in a cool place. Notes Sandalwood, bergamot and grapefruit essential oils are generally considered safe for use during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. Citrus oils can increase photosensitivity. So, please take extra caution in the skin when wearing this solid perfume.
