"Vanity of vanity! All things are vanity!... What profit comes to man from all the toil and anxiety of heart with which he has labored under the sun?" Ecclesiastes 1:2 and 2:22-23 Day in and day out - many of us work and labor while many look for employment. Sometimes it is meaningful work, but all too often, as the Bible describes labor, it is fruitless and seems like vanity. Yet without the labor of the multitudes, we would not have homes to live in or food on our tables. Jesus knew the toil of the carpenter shop in Nazareth. He put work and labor into a larger perspective too, and told his followers, “Come to me, all you who labor and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest” (Matt. 11:28). In this spirit we might pray for those who are unemployed and employed, and pray in gratitude for those who make our way of life possible. O God from Whom we have received life and all earthly blessings, give us each day what we need. Give us the strength to perform faithfully our appointed tasks; bless the work of our hands and of our minds. Grant that we may serve You in sickness and in health, in necessity and in abundance; sanctify our joys and our trials, and give us grace to seek first Your kingdom, in the sure and certain faith that all else shall be added unto us, through Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen
