Various Fat Loss Methods Reviewed: “The Danger Zone” This is probably the most relevant scenario to describe for a lot of my readers. They have made significant changes to the way they eat, but they haven’t figure out how to progress past the point they’re at, so they default to logic. The thought process goes like this: “If I am eating less and can’t lose fat then I need to up my level of activity.” Now, remember – this isn’t your body’s first rodeo – it is has millions of years of evolution to draw from and you certainly aren’t the first person to try this ill-conceived approach to fat loss. This is taking common sense advice and pushing it into dangerous territories. The Dangers of Under Eating Combined with Extreme Activity This person has basically sucked the calories dry, so in an attempt to “buy calories”, they start to exercise. In the beginning they might just start with some low intensity cardio, and as the results dwindle over time, it doesn’t seem logical that adding more food will work, so they add more intense activity. Now, the introduction of intense activity like weightlifting, sprinting, cross training, etc. has made them a more capable human being than they were when they weren’t doing anything at all, but their degree of functioning has only marginally increased. From a cardiovascular standpoint you can see some good gains but as this group starts to lift weights, they won’t see similar results. Let me pause for a second here and clarify my previous statement. Results are relative. If you have never lifted weights in your life and you move from 45 pounds to 75 pounds, that seems like a lot but trying to explore the limits of what you are capable of , without enough food, is not a formula that will get you the best results. There are a lot of people walking around our gyms in this state with chronic stress levels; the EXTREMES they are pursuing to get results aren’t actually netting very much in terms of fat loss or performance improvement – it just seems so hard that it has to be working, right? Wrong. Simply put, if your body wants ‘x’ amount of calories and you consistently feed it less and less, it adjusts. If you add in extreme activity, it adjusts to that as well. For most people this adjustment increases their cortisol response and their body holds on to fat Pros I have to admit it was hard to come up with a pro for this scenario but I guess the person is slightly more capable as a human being With minor adjustments they can improve the health they have been destroying in search of fat loss nirvana and become the athletes they’re desperately trying to become Cons Let’s start with the most important part. This example is harming themselves, and if they continue past the red line, not only will they struggle to reach their fat loss goals, but as they look to even more extreme measures to get a result, they further the toll they are taking on their bodies. Sickness, injury, and a lack of recovery are outward signs for these folks. Basically, they are digging a hole they will struggle to climb out of, and the solution will often lead to eating disorder-type behavior. For a lot of people that started all of this to lose fat, they’re not mentally prepared to do what is needed to undo the damage they’ve caused. They need to eat more, but it just doesn’t seem logical. That is why this is the “danger zone” – because what starts off as a struggle becomes a whole different can of worms. It degenerates into a deleterious situation for the individual as they undertake increasingly extreme measures to lose fat, when what they really need is a balanced approach.
