The other movements are no less pertinent in their observations on the relationship between society and the individual, and the outspoken composition is imbued with tragic irony. The Thirteenth Symphony is a kaleidoscope of shifting emotions, and this deeply personal work stands as one of the 20th centurys symphonic masterpieces.
