VayYishlah points out something very important on the spiritual path: Good and evil are not separate, and the power of the Satan, as gevurah, is important for us to use for inspiring tikkun. When we overcome the satanic, demonic forces of temptation, accusation, and prosecution, we raise ourselves spiritually. This battle between Ya’akov and ’Esav’s angel went on overnight, until dawn. For most everyone it is indeed a lifetime battle. In the kabbalistic teachings, during the period from midnight to the rising of the morning star (known as A’lot Ha’shakhar), the energy is very strong, and this is the best time to meditate, because it connects us to zeir anpin, or the central column. Zeir anpin is the sacred sun who, when fully awake, merges with malchut, the sacred female, making full enlightenment. It is also the energy of tiferet, which is beauty and full compassion. So after midnight toward sunrise, Ya’akov was being energized. In addition to the cycle of the day, he was also being energized by the power of light generated by the 248 positive mitzvot and the 365 negative mitzvot. When we follow these, we plug into the positive energetic grid of Yah. That is what gave Ya’akov the power to defeat the angel. There is a strong metaphysical-kabbalistic message here because the mitzvot, and our direct connection to the Divine, are truly our protection against the dark occult forces that are just as active today as in previous times. For people who are aware of these active dark forces in our personal life and on the planet, we derive the most potent protection from devotion to the Divine, generating light and love in all actions, and living by the mitzvot.
