Velai illatha….. Vegetables are good for health since they contain vitamins, minerals etc., in natural and easily digestible form. However our shastras come in the way when we would like to consume some selective vegetables as and when we like . I do not know why such tasty vegetables are restricted entry into the kitchen. I can understand about the restrictions imposed on Garlic and Onion since they are highly aromatic and mostly used by the non-veg. eaters since the non-veg stuff need these two items to get rid of the flesh and blood smell. These two items are used as supplement items for both vegetables and non-veg.stuff. Each vegetable has a natural flavour and taste of its own. No need to add any supplement vegetables like onion or garlic. Coming to our point, our Shastras or custom or culture or practice , I mean, the Brahmin practice especially our Madhwa practice is that certain vegetables are not allowed on certain days, occasions. I come to my point. My favourite vegetable , along with some other vegetables, is Rhyzome/Alucha gadde/cheppankizhangu. It is a tasty vegetable root, though somewhat sticky. It can be taken as Bhaji or Podi in Sambar or Pitla. For Avial it is a must. In Kadi (Morekuzhambu/Majjigeuli) it provides a nice taste. However this poor vegetable is not allowed to be prepared for these dishes on Fridays, festival days, and some other auspicious days. Only on some days like Amasvasya, or some other ‘unholy’ days only Mr. Alucha gadde would see the plate or leaf. Why or who made this restriction ? Why unholyness is attached to such a tasty vegetable. Unlike Cabbage, carrot, knoll-kol, it is purely Indian. To my knowledge no onus is attached to this vegetabale. Its ‘udan pirappukal’ Surana gadde’(senai) and Potato have full freedom and they are used on all days and on all occasions. Why this step motherly treatment to Alucha gadde only. It is high time we give freedom to this calm and quiet vegetable.
