Veliyam Bharghavan, veteran communist leader, is no more. He was 85 and was suffering from respiratory ailments. He breathed his last at the Thiruvananthapuram medical college. Bharghavan was the state Secretary of the Communist Party of India from 1998 to 2010. In 2010, he retired from that position due to bad health. He entered politics as a student activist and went on to become State secretary of the party in 1998. He was re-elected to the post at the Palakkad and Kottayam State conferences of the party. He also served as member of the Kerala Assembly in 1957 and 1960. Veliyam Bharghavan had played a significant part in forging the coalition arrangement in Kerala, initially with the Congress as a component of the United Front (UF) and later with the Communist Party of India (Marxist) as the alliance leader.
