Venomous or poisonous? Snakes are not poisonous but some are venomous. Its all about the delivery system. Venom is injected. If a rattlesnake or cottonmouth were to bite you it would hurt a lot and you should go to a medical facility as soon as possible. Floridas venomous snakes are the diamondback and pygmy rattlers, cottonmouth, coral, and copperhead (the latter are not found at St. Marks). Poison is ingested so even if you were to eat a rattlesnake or cottonmouth you would not be poisoned. Venomous snakes - and all wild snakes - should be left alone. A venomous snake is unlikely to strike unless it feels threatened. It takes energy to produce venom and they really dont want to waste it. Other non-venomous snakes may strike and actually bite someone if picked up or threatened. Best leave them be.
