Verbal Tag I stumbled upon a fellow As he struggled with his bag He seemed an easy target For a game of verbal tag He seemed ordinary, plain I knew I wouldnt be in danger As I calmly approached and asked, Allow me to paint you a picture, stranger? But you have no paint. he said Please dont be absurd. Excuse me my dear fellow, I paint in ordinary words. He replied, Sir, you have no brushes, not a canvas here to find! My pens the only brush Ill need, my canvas is your mind. The man looking a bit perplexed, reached up and scratched his head and took me by surprise with these fourteen words he said, Allow me to craft a poem for you of crashing waves and soaring birds. Sir, where is this pen youll use to scribe your page of words? With a smile, a brush came from his pocket, a canvas from his bag It seemed and artist beat me in this game of verbal tag. Feeling like a circus clown It struck me as absurd That an artist out-foxed a poet At his game of wit and words. ~Eric Vance Walton~ A little about this poem: this was one if my first published poems. It was written in 1992 and appeared in my first collection, Continuum, Poetry for a New Age. A few copies can still be found on the internet but its been out of print for years.
