Vermont Law Community Mourns Professor Cheryl Hanna; Funeral Services Friday, August 1 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — CONTACT: Maryellen Apelquist, Director of Media Relations, Vermont Law School office: 802-831-1228, cell: 802-299-5593, [email protected] SOUTH ROYALTON, Vt., July 29, 2014–– Funeral services for Vermont Law School Professor Cheryl Hanna will be held Friday, August 1, in the Ira Allen Chapel at the University of Vermont, her family and school officials confirmed today. VLS Trustee Emeritus and former Board of Trustees Chairman J. Scott Cameron will speak at the service, which will begin at 3 p.m. “Our thoughts and prayers are with Cheryl’s family during this time of deepest sorrow—and with our students, alumni, faculty, and staff who mourn their colleague, teacher, and friend,” said President and Dean Marc Mihaly. “Cheryl’s legacy of leadership, scholarship, advocacy, and service is an inspiration to all of us.” Professor Hanna’s legacy to VLS, to Vermont, and to the legal community is profound and far-reaching: as a mentor; as a legal expert; as a media commentator; as an advocate for the underserved; as an inspiration to our students, particularly young women; as an ambassador to partner educational institutions; and as a powerful source for innovation. She played a pivotal leadership role at VLS—most recently, in the face of the changing landscape for legal education—and her passion and commitment were an inspiration to her fellow educators. Professor Hanna’s leadership embodied her energy and innovative spirit. She accomplished much and left VLS with systems, relationships, and capacities that will carry forward her significant contributions. No one could speak to—and live—the Vermont Law School mission to make a difference better than Cheryl Hanna. The administration at VLS asks that all who knew Professor Hanna honor her by following her example of community service and commitment to mentoring and encouraging young people. A “Cheryl Hanna Legacy” page has been established on the Vermont Law School website, at vermontlaw.edu/cherylhanna/, with a Remembrance Journal for members of the greater VLS community to share their thoughts and memories of Professor Hanna. Professor Hanna’s family asks that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made in her memory to Women Helping Battered Women, P.O. Box 1535, Burlington, Vt. 05402; phone: 802-658-3131. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. ### Vermont Law School, a private, independent institution, has the top-ranked environmental law program and one of the top-ranked clinical training programs in the nation, according to U.S. News & World Report.
