Verrrrrrry RARE FOOTAGE ONLY 4 YOU MY FANS :) Fiero History The father of GM’s Fiero design and the car’s unique assembly method was Hulki Aldikacti, president of Entech. After 5 years of development, the Fiero, meaning proud in Italian was built from 1984 to 1988. There are several Fieros to choose from: the base Fiero coupe, Sport coupe, SE, and GT, adopted from the 500 Fiero pace car. In addition, there is the rarest model of all (only 36 were completed out of 44) the Canadian Enterra Vipre. The Fiero’s nimble handling is one of the car’s best characteristics. Twisty roads are the Fiero’s forte and it conveys a precise, quick, sports car feel. The Fiero feels solid all the way up to top speed and goes down the road with plenty of grip. The body stands about 4 feet tall and has bucket seats, “longitudinal and vertical roominess” according to Automobile Magazine. The Fiero GT chassis are classified by many as evolutionary. The rear trunk and passenger cabin is well insulated from sound and engine heat. The fuel tank is positioned in the middle of the car for best protection and weight distribution. The engine and transaxle are mounted on the cradle at the rear of the car. The cylinder head was re-designed and all new casting was used to incorporate swirl-port fuel delivery. The combustion chambers and shape of the piston tops were also redesigned which increased compression ratios. Pontiac added it’s own custom-tailored exhaust system consisting of fabricated sheet metal headers, carefully routed pipes and a low restriction muffler. The interior of the Fiero gives one a “cockpit” environment. Controls fall right to hand, with several gauges for engine status. The wheel, pedals, and shifter are all placed well. An adjustable steering column which operates turn signals, wipers, cruise control, and headlight beams are all well located. The interior also has 4 pockets and larger storage beneath the front and rear deck lids. The seats are excellent and well-padded with plenty of interior comfort and leg room for two occupants. Many Fieros have sound systems fit for a king. An optional five-speaker stereo includes a separate control for the subwoofer…which is music from heaven. Fiero’s corrosion-free Enduraflex rustproof quality interests almost anyone who drives a car and wants to maintain that crisp new look as the years pass “her” into history. The new plastic panel skin over steel sportscar was the right car at the right time. It was named by Car & Driver magazine as one of the “Ten Best Cars of 1984”. Repairing a damaged panel is as simple as buying a new one, painting it, and bolting it into place. Power steering is neither available nor needed because of the small amount of weight over the front wheels. The car has 4 wheel disc brakes. Fiero was a concept car where new technologies were continually being road tested by the consumer. Fieros have a choice of both manual and automatic transmission and are powered by a 4 or 6 cylinder engine. The average gas mileage is from 25 to 30 miles per gallon, depending on one’s driving environment. The Fiero has a lack of wind and road noise at any speed. The car feels as stable at 120 mph as it does at 60 mph. “The Fiero sports car surely ranks among the top two most important domestic car developments”, according to Motor Trend magazine. The Fiero V6 GT looks, sounds, and feels like a baby Corvette in the most complimentary way! On cold mornings, the Fiero immediately fires up and settles into its 1500 rpm idle. The Fiero feels strong, fast, bigger than it looks, attractive, comfortable, exotic, sticks to the road like glue, and sounds super. It has in fact withstood the federal government’s crash barrier tests. The Fiero GT in low-emissions America make its 8.5 seconds to 60 mph as quick as the vintage BMW 533i, Mazda RX7, GSL-SE, and Toyota’s MR2. Also, “braking” gives the Pontiac Fiero another thumbs-up over its rivals including the Dino and Ferrari. Yet, in spite of all the positives, the GM executive committee voted on Feb. 29, 1988 to announce March 1st the discontinuance of the Fiero. Many say there was a company fear that the Pontiac Fiero was destined to compete with the Corvette at half the price. The ultimate concern was long term profits to GM’s bottom line! The bottom line for the sports car enthusiast and consumer, is the space frame techniques, modern concepts, comfort, and beauty were and remain revolutionary to this day! The Fiero has carved out in the sports car world a special place in innovative automotive history. Since production of these cars halted after the 1988 model year, there are few working Fieros available. For this reason, the Foundation feels owning a Fiero will not only be fun and enjoyable, but also financially rewarding for its owner.
