Very concerned when I woke up to the news that the NHS in England are possibly lowering Body Mass Index (BMI) to 30+ to be considered for gastric band surgery for Type 2 Diabetes. BMI is not an accurate assumption of your body status. Ill use an example; someone who a lot of you know that comes to classes has a BMI of over 30. He is by no way obese but when you think about it, hed be considered for surgery? This is madness and very, very expensive. Type 2 Diabetes can be diet-controlled but most patients arent offered the tools to do so. Offering surgery does not make people healthier or change their current habits which is VITAL to health. Spending this money on health education and teaching people about foods, adapting food labels and introducing food laws of excess sugar & chemicals in foods would be much more effective. Probably not initially but definitely in the long term. What are your thoughts?
