Very disappointed in the decision by the federal Department of Agriculture to grant Livestock Shipping Services (LSS) a further export permit after serious breaches of the live export regulations, including sheep being sold and slaughtered illegally in Jordan and the cruel slaughter of cattle in Gaza, as well as recent revelations of the heat stress deaths of 4000 sheep at sea on an LSS shipment. In the light of such conduct and omissions on the part of LSS it is extremely difficult to see how the department as regulator could have been satisfied that LSS is likely to comply with export regulations in future. This decision highlights the departments inherent conflict of interest and the need for an Independent Office of Animal Welfare.
