Very good analysis of the Palestinian Authorities move to join the International Criminal Court. It is about gaining leverage, not scuttling the so-called peace process. Abbas’ decision to join the ICC is part of a broader strategy of internationalizing the conflict in order to increase pressure not only on Israel but on the United States as well. Despite what many believe, the strategy is not designed to bypass or preclude negotiations but to give the Palestinians some badly-needed leverage in a future negotiations process—albeit one that is built on an entirely different framework and structure. As far as Palestinians are concerned, the old peace process dominated exclusively by the United States, and its many domestic political constraints, is no longer tenable—and judging by the growing number of initiatives to recognize Palestinian statehood, much of the international community seems to agree. buff.ly/1Kt4aaQ
