This is very different than the staff-driven versions of social unionism popular today. "The debate on labor-community alliances provides a framework for recognizing the remarkable character of the early alliance between SSEU and the welfare rights movement coalition. In the terms of these authors, the 1965-1967 period shows an unusually strong and positive alliance: it incorporated concerns voiced from clients themselves, included non-labor demands, shared some degree of decision-making between the union and community groups, and reflected a broader social justice vision. In took the further and unusual step of workers using their position as workers, through disruptive action, to push for and win community demands."
