Very good read!! Its covers a lot of issues, all of which are important. However, the main idea is that people dont understand math because they dont understand and grasp the conceptual constructs of mathematics. Not their fault really, all that is ever taught is procedural algorithms. How do you expect teachers who were taught procedurally to all of a sudden KNOW and teach conceptually when they themselves usually dont understand it? This is what the Common Core is trying to do. Im not saying its good or bad.. Im just giving you what the goal is. Here is an example for you: Take the mixed number 3 2/5... to change this to an improper fraction you were all taught to multiply the whole number by the denominator and add the numerator....WHY? Werent you also taught to always to the same thing to the top & bottom (numerator & denominator) of a fraction? But now you are multiplying the bottom and adding the top. WHY WHY WHY? If you cant answer the WHY... then all you too know is procedural algorithms..... you were never given the CONCEPT of this process. Mathematics is an CONCEPTUAL Science that contains patterns which allow for the creation of algorithms that work every time..... how do you think those algorithms were developed??
