Very happy birthday to my teacher Ramnarayan. He is well-known for versatility - from cricket to creative writing - but his teaching is what i know most and cherish. In our very first class with him we were to do an on-the-spot creative writing piece in which he asked one of to leave the class room for writing a poem in which black color/ darkness was used a symbol of evil. He does not concede even poetic licence to even unreflective racism. An unusually harsh gesture in a college known for its consistent civility. When i failed to submit a piece of expository writing assignment despite his patient advice and mild bullying, he tricked me into an argument in which i crossed the limits of politeness and later sent him a detailed argument and apology. When i anxiously met him after that to see if he had forgiven me or not, he told me with a naughty smile that he had got his assignment and gave me a generous grade. There are many more stories like that from my experience alone and he has hundreds and hundreds of students! I am proud and grateful to be a student of this gentle, handsome, tactful, provocative, probing, tolerant, open and open-minded teacher. We do not share any political views but what great time we shared! I wish you all the time in the world to go on doing your teaching, Ramnarayan Venkatraman!
