Very interesting Fact .. -------------------------- There is something called Agricultural produce market committee (APMC) in most states in india. farmers cant sell their goods outside APMC unless its contract farming. These APMCs have become cartels of select vendors who enforce low buying rates to farmers and then ensure high rates when re-selling to retail vendors. A recent report had mentioned that the turnover for last year of APMC at Vashi (which supplies to Mumbai area) was around Rs 10,000 Crores whereas the estimated amount spent by Mumbaikars in on buying vegetables is Rs 50,000-60,000 crores. this tells us the extent of profit and where it is going. (I am trying to find the link, will post soon) Opening up this market, whereby a farmer can sell to any buyer he wants, would greatly help in this regard. There have been a bunch of committee reports which have all recommended that APMCs be demolished or at least their monopoly should be reduced. A state govt with foresight & enough political can do this, since this has to happen at the state level. farmers market should be created which allow the farmers to directly sell farm produces to customers. It will promote locally grown food. So less transportation and refrigeration cost, thus good for the environment also
