Very pleased to be able to agree with all those who loved this. Id been avoiding it despite the near unanimous praise because I dont really care that much about Cruise or Liman and wasnt particularly interested in either this whole milieu or what I took to be the central conceit (Groundhog Day as some kind of infinite video game training session?). But I was glad to have all my misgivings put to rest. What was most surprising and pleasurable about this for me was how elegant it was, how finely crafted--I didnt expect that level of attention to the nuance of the structure and that made a huge difference I think in what otherwise might well have been purely repetitive drudgery. Its also a deeply *satisfying* film in some ways that are admittedly obvious but effective nonetheless. I dont always or even often want such a profound sense of satisfaction as it can seem too tidy or pat but here it works and is utterly appropriate as the clean perfectness of it is an apt response to its particular existential question. Certainly this is the best thing Ive seen Cruise do in years; I have to admit, it is amusing to me that he can still find new ways to celebrate his ego on screen and, in this case, to actually justify it by earning it.
