The Epic of Maya Angelou In St. Louis, in ’28, On April 4th that day, A famous hero would be born To grow and pave the way As a child, her interest bloomed For music, dance, and art, For which, to San Francisco She’d eventually depart A few decades of waitressing To support her and her son But the arts finally took over; That café would soon be gone Her passion gave her strength To continue with the arts, and her album, Calypso Lady won at least a thousand hearts About some 8 years later, The ’60s rolled around And when Malcolm X was killed, she knew She had to make some sound Four years later, in ’69, She finally spread her wings, When she published her first novel, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings From then on, the world became her paper; she was the pen, and several poems followed, like “A Conceit”, “Alone”, and “Men” On the 24th of May, ’14, Her soul had left the Earth But for 86 years she touched us all, A prodigy from birth Still, in death, she’ll never stop, Her spirit will soar on We’ll miss you, Maya Angelou, But you’re never truly gone
