Very sad today... we took little Tasha (yesterdays Downey rescue) to the vet this morning to have surgery to remove her mammary tumors. The vet xrayed her first to see if the cancer had spread yet... and unfortunately found it had spread to her lungs. Our vet felt she is in the end stages of cancer.. she has multiple tumors all along her side and the big largest tumor is oozing some. She didnt feel surgery should be done, as it is too much to put her through for the short amount of time she has left (the vet estimated a couple of months if that). We will be giving her comfort care and show her some love she made not have had. She is on pain meds for now and has some steak dinners in her future. Poor girl, I hate to think that she was probably just out in the backyard in our recent rainstorms.. then dump before Christmas (probably to save the cost of euthanizing her). Sadly had she been spayed years ago odds are she would not have gotten cancer. I know I am preaching to the choir here... so if you have any friends or family with unspayed females dogs (or cats)... please tell them they are putting their beloved pet at risk for mammary cancer as well as pyometra. Urge them to please spay their pets.
