Very serious and what can you and I do to stop the spread? Cholera claims two lives in Volta Two people have died and 53 are currently on admission at various hospitals in the Ketu South Municipality in the Volta Region following an outbreak of cholera. There are fears the numbers may rise due to the insanitary conditions in most communities in the municipality. Joy News’ Volta Region Correspondent Ivy Setordjie reports the situation is dire. The Municipal Director of the Ghana Health Service in the Ketu South Municipality Joseph Degla in an interview with Setordjie attributed the two deaths to delays in bringing the affected persons to the hospital. He said the Service has brought in medicine to fight the epidemic in the Municipality. He said they are carrying out a campaign to educate the people about the need for a clean environment and also on what to do if one is affected by cholera. The Cholera outbreak is gradually going nationwide after Accra, Ashanti and Western Region recorded its own cholera related deaths. Accra has had the highest casualty with over 1000 deaths and 5000 reported cases. Cholera is a bacterial infection caused by drinking contaminated water or eating food that has been in contact with contaminated water. Not everyone who becomes infected will develop symptoms, but those who do will usually experience: 1. Severe, watery diarrhoea 2. Feeling and being sick 3. Stomach cramps These symptoms generally develop within a few days of infection, although they can sometimes occur after only a few hours. Without treatment, the combination of diarrhoea and vomiting can cause a person to quickly become dehydrated and go into shock (where there is a sudden massive drop in blood pressure). In the most severe cases, the condition can be fatal Source: Joy News of Saturday, 23 August 2014
