Very well put by a mother from Alberta (name of mother and son withheld): My email to my sons grade 9 Socialist Studies Teacher. Today, my son was shown a movie that has been debunked over an over again. He was removed from said movie at my request. Based on the conversations Ive had with my son lately about his social studies class, I had suspected that he would be shown the Inconvenient Truth at some point in the near future. It happened a bit sooner than I had thought. While I am all for a fact centric, science based discussion, Al Gores documentary offers no hard facts, and was removed from the curriculum in the United Kingdom after a lawsuit. Now, it can only be shown to students with the disclaimer that it is a political (the adjudicators word, not mine) movie. Hypothetical climate modeling versus demonstrable climate data has a place in a science class room. It has no place in a social studies class, unless you were following up with a discussion about first world wealth transfer to the developing world based on the unratified Kyoto accord. I doubt thats where you were going next. Further, I understand you asked my son for 3 examples of inaccuracies in the movie, Ive attached 35, for balance, cited appropriately in the following article. scienceandpublicpolicy.org/monckton/goreerrors.html It was very concerning that my son was questioned about what my husband and I do for a living, and what our political leanings are. This, to me, smacks of elitism. Is the insinuation that all learning must be administered by the state? That one cant garner legitimate knowledge independently through ones own research when they have an interest in certain issues? Or that as oil patch folks, we are just are too simple to get our heads around all this sciencey stuff? If this is the case, what a terrible lesson to leave a child with. Most learning takes place outside of an institution. My son has been raised to think for himself, critically. I would hope the teachers my son has come in contact and will encounter going forward will foster the attitude of life long learning, not smother it.... regardless of his political leanings or his blue collar one percenter aspirations. I am his parent. I direct my childrens education. If I say I dont want him watching a video repeatedly debunked by even the IPCCs own data (not climate models, but actual imperical data), then he wont watch it and you wont be grilling him about it. There will not be a power struggle. Sure, we may be just right wing oil patch rubes with an enduring interest in the politics of climate, but hey, David Suzuki isnt a climatologist either. Hes a geneticist with a speciality in fruit flies that he probably should stuck with, since hes not aware of the IPCC climate data, either.
