Via ABS CBN Pinoys in Europe warned on crackdown vs illegal migrants By Macel Ingles, ABS-CBN Europe News Bureau Posted at 10/22/2014 7:45 PM | Updated as of 10/22/2014 COPENHAGEN - Migrante-Denmark, a Filipino migrant organization based in this city, warned undocumented Filipinos about the ongoing Europe-wide crackdown on illegal migrants. Dubbed as “Mos Maiorum,” or ancient laws, the operation is supposed to help European police and its EU border security forces, FRONTEX, gather information on illegal migrants reportedly involved in drug trafficking and human smuggling in Europe. According to Migrante-Denmark, the operation started in the country last month and they have already monitored reports of apprehensions by the police. But they said that, so far, they have not received confirmed reports of undocumented Pinoys being arrested. However, the organization urged kababayans to take precautions. ”Nagsasabi tayo sa kanila na mag-ingat lalo na sa pagsakay ng tren, kailangang kumpleto ang sona nila para walang batayan na imbestigahan sila,” Pat Valenzuela of Migrante-Denmark told ABS-CBN Europe in an interview at the organization’s general assembly held in Copenhagen last October 19. LEGAL ASSISTANCE Valenzuela also said his group is now distributing their lawyers’ calling card to Pinoys in Copenhagen in case they need legal assistance if questioned or arrested by the Danish police. The group said it is helping undocumented Pinoys despite their status. It also views the decision of Filipinos who have stayed in the country, despite lack of visas, as not a “crime.” ”Ang mga taong ito ay may mga pamilya din at gustong makatulong sa Pilipinas at karamihan sa kanila ay gusto lang makaipon at babalik din ng Pilipinas,” Valenzuela added. He also said that they have already assisted a lot of Filipinos who have come to them for assistance, including four Filipino women who got medical aid and gave birth at hospitals despite not having legal papers that entitle them to free public health care.
