Via Angela Storr WHY SHOULD EDUCATORS GIVE THEIR VOTE TO THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY? (One teachers thought (as sent to the CP) as to how you should vote this election...) At current polling, National looks like a certainty to choose the next government. This has got me thinking as an educator where my vote should go this year. I am dead against the IES and other educational policies that National has brought in. However, where could my vote go that would actually make a difference to education (which is how I am basing my entire decision to vote this year on...) To get my education vote heard, I am giving my vote to the Conservative Party this year. What??! Thats correct. The Conservative Party have made it clear they will listen to teachers point of view when it comes to making decisions around education policy (ironic in itself, their education policy hasnt been released yet). Here are two answered questions from the Conservative Party website: What do you know about GERM? Do you think the agenda the National Government is taking re GERM is something worth pursuing in NZ? The Global Education Reform Movement (GERM) does not align with our policy goal of more choice and empowerment of parents and teachers at the coal face. I have not personally studied the GERM agenda in detail, however given the cost and disruption of a reform that clearly lacks support from teachers and parents (key stakeholders) it isnt worth pursuing in our view. In education: How do Charter Schools fit with you? Do you think we need these schools in New Zealand? Our overall goal in education is to reduce the ministry bureaucracy and put more resource and choice back into schools. We believe in empowering parents and teachers trusting them to make the best decisions at the coal face. The Conservative Party believes that variety and choice in education is helpful and desirable. Children are not cookie cut from one mould and a variety of approaches is preferred. We dont need charter schools but having them will give greater choice so we are not opposed, provided certain clear guidelines and accountabilities are in place. So... thats why I feel a tactical vote this election for the Conservatives will allow them to influence the (likely) next National govt... bar some crazy movements in the polls before the 20th of September. A vote for the left wont be as effective if theyre not likely to form a government. Have a think about it.
