Vic Bay Quad In Memory of John Pfaff 25-27 October 2013, Victoria Bay Southern Cape This time its thumbs up for the Vic Bay Quad Huge surf and impossible contest conditions at Victoria Bay forced the postponement of the annual Vic Bay Quad In memory of John Pfaff from its original date in mid August to this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The event features the five Cape based provinces and follows a tradition that was begun back in 1976 when Southern Cape’s first chairman, John Pfaff put the event together After a hiatus of five years the “Quad” came back to life last year and once again surfers from hosts Southern Cape, defending champions Border, Western Province, Eastern Province and Boland will back in action at this fantastic point break. Teams are made up of Men’s, Women’s, Men’s Over 30, Over 40 and Over 50 Divisions. There is no prize money at stake only medals for the finalists, trophies for the respective champions and the Vic Bay Quad Team Trophy. The Vic Bay Quad always was a special event and in the spirit of this each province donated a trophy for the division winners while Steve Hair, a friend of John Pfaff’s, created a one of a kind handcrafted trophy for the winning team. Last year’s winners were Sean Holmes (Open),Nikita Robb (Women), Steven Gadd (O30),Wayne Monk (O40) and Steven Hair (O50). Border won the Team Trophy. The Vic Bay Quad was first held in May 1976 and involved teams from WP, EP and SWD. (It was actually known as the Vic Bay Triangular for the first three or four years.) Although it was scheduled for Vic Bay that year it took place at Wilderness because the surf was too small at Vic. Over the years Border, Boland and the SA Defence Force competed in this fantastic contest which will always be John’s legacy. John Pfaff and his family have been part of Southern Cape surfing for over four decades. This contest, which was not merely a competitive event but also a social get together, is part of John’s surfing legacy. Using a unique format and formula comprising fun, competitiveness and camaraderie, 2013 will see many of the surfers who were at that very first event making the journey to Vic Bay to celebrate the event and remember John Pfaff. The Quad is presented by Surfing South Africa and hosted by Southern Cape Board Riders Association. Surfing South Africa is recognized by the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) as the governing body for the sport in South Africa. Surfing South Africa is a member of the International Surfing Association (ISA).
