Victory! It looks like the work of Lynn United for Change and others across the state has defeated bill S 1987! Grassroots groups, concerned residents, and advocates have been making calls, sending letters, signing petitions, and pushing Governor Deval Patrick to take action. And Governor Patrick has now amended the bill to protect victims of illegal foreclosure. The bill is likely to die completely, since the State Senate and State House are unlikely to pass the amended version. S 1987 would have undermined the ability of victims of illegal foreclosure to bring their case to court. The title insurance and real estate industries pushed hard for this bill, using their money, influence, and lobbyists to push it through the State House. They snuck the bill through the Senate, avoiding opposition from some of our allies there, by misrepresenting the bills impact and intent. Some elected officials in other positions could have intervened, but they seemed more interested in furthering their political careers than in doing the right thing. A minor amendment passed by the House and Senate made the bill very slightly less harmful, but it was still terrible; the effort to get Governor Patrick to help was our last chance. Thanks to all the Lynn United members who took part in this campaign -- our groups efforts were key. Well be posting more news about this, along with updates from other organizations that were critical to this victory. Thanks also to State Rep Lori Ehrlich (who represents Swampscott, Marblehead, and parts of Lynn). She stood up for victims of illegal foreclosure, co-sponsoring a great amendment and advocating for homeowners.
