Video Game Review #5 World of Tanks: Xbox360 Edition World of Tanks is a free game. The reason the title states it’s the xbox360 version is because initially this was a game strictly for computers. About a year ago they kicked off their open beta testing for Xbox Live. It officially came out somewhere around a half a year back. I played the computer game with my friend over his house years ago but my computers have always been too slow to handle it. I did however jump on that open beta testing the second I heard about it. I had what I would consider a “nerdgasm” when it was announced and that it would still be free. (You do need an XboxLive account to play.) This game is meant to be played online. There isn’t a single player mode. There isn’t a plot to share. The premise is rather simple. _______________________________________ Teams get as large as fifteen versus fifteen. Players choose from five different classes of vehicles to participate. All of the vehicles are from the World Wars eras. So far they have Russian, German, British and American. (The computer version even has China and France… Maybe another but I can’t remember.) Light Tanks don’t have much armor but can speed around quickly. Medium Tanks have a little more power and armor but lose some speed. Heavy Tanks sacrifice speed for power and armor. Tank Destroyers are all about firepower and less about armor or maneuverability. Artillery can fire projectiles long distances but have the weakest armor. Everyone gets shuffled together and chosen randomly to be evenly matched. _______________________________________ You can create a Platoon with a total of three members so you can fight with friends. (In the computer version you can actually create whole teams called clans.) As you play matches, you gain experience. This is represented by a silver star with numbers… You can use this to research parts for the vehicle that was used to earn it… The parts unlock new vehicles to research. Ten percent of the experience from each match goes into what’s called “Free experience”, which is gold stars. This can be used to research any part or vehicle vehicle. Once a part or vehicle is unlocked you can buy it. Silver coins are earned in matches and Gold can be bough with money in the store. Don’t worry though, they are constantly having contests and promotions to earn Gold if you’re good enough… Even if you don’t get any Gold; No sweat. This isn’t a game where you need to buy anything to play or unlock vital parts. You can reach the highest levels without buying anything. They just have the bonuses so they can pay their staff. Another cool factor is that you can attach equipment for a personal touch. Some get destroyed when you remove it. Others can be removed to get your silver back. An example would be adding a “Gun Rammer” to increase your reloading speed. Consumables are interesting too. They give boosts like “octane fuel” to go faster. The remaining element that takes customization to another level is that the crew inside your vehicle can be trained to gain perks and abilities… This can give advantages like better aiming or breaking… The maps are definitely large enough to fit thirty tanks. They keep adding more and more too. Recently they’ve also been improving on what was there from the start by adding weather or night versions. When you multiply the many maps times the styles of play the variations become mind-boggling. Normally, you would win a match by occupying your enemys’ base long enough or killing every enemy tank… There are some modes where you’re either defending or taking a specific base… There is yet another where you and your enemy don’t have bases of your own, you have to fight over one in the middle. The controls are pretty easy to get the hang of. You can even message me for tips. I really enjoy this game. The only flaws are that the servers rarely shut-down unexpectedly and sometimes the game lags. That can be very frustrating because you will freeze all together so you’re jamming your control forward to drive… Then when it kicks back in you might go speeding off a cliff or turning in circles in whatever direction you were trying to go… It’s pretty bad when you’re about to kill an enemy tank and your gun freezes, then you die when you should’ve killed them. Overall though, the lag will never be as bad as it was during the beta testing. It was worth it to get two premium tanks out of it though. I give this game an 8 out of 10 It can’t be a full ten because it’s nowhere near as intricate or immersive as Skyrim. It can’t be a nine because it lags. That’s it. If it never lags again I’ll come back and change it to a nine. _______________________________ For more writings... including a lot more reviews… as well as various topics like… original works, miscellaneous reviews, experiences and perspectives… feel free to like my page...
