#Video RECLAIMING KHAGRABARI - the village that suffered a massacre [#Assam Bodo Anti-Muslim Violence] A Short Film by Smita Dutta for the STRATEGIC RESEARCH & ANALYSIS ORGANISATION. On 2 May 2014, in a remote and isolated village called Khagrabari in the Barnagar Revenue Circle of Baksa District of Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) in Assam, Bodo armed elements, ex-BLT, ex-poachers and forest guards massacred 38 Muslim villagers. This was the last and the worst of the three carnages of Muslims that took place in less than 24 hours in BTAD. Of the 38 Muslim villagers who died, 37 were either women or children. A total of 22 children died, the youngest being just 3 months old. Of those 22, bodies of two have still not been found. All of the residents of Khagrabari fled the village following the massacre to Narayanguri or Raghabill on the other side of the Beki River. It took enormous efforts to contain the violence and enable the villagers to return within the shortest possible time. In earlier spates of violence against non-Bodos in BTAD, survivors could rarely return home. Survivors from spates of violence as far back as 1993 are still living in squalid relief camps whose existence the government doesnt acknowledge officially. But response to Khagrabari massacre was to be different. With a responsive district administration and firm state and central governments, survivors of the Khagrabari Massacre were enabled to return home within three weeks. This was also enabled in many ways by the team from Strategic Research & Analysis Organisation that kept a constant watch on the situation and stepped into assist every now and then in numerous ways. It will be a long road to justice and peace, but the tide has turned. Reclaiming Khagrabari was the first step. youtube/watch?v=Wk8knazSUdw
