Video recommendation to help my working poor boyfriend dis-identify with owning class? ::posted Sun, 19 Oct 2014 02:57:54 +0000:: ift.tt/1FlQ0Wm I was shocked to hear the other day that my boyfriend was thinking of voting against a local minimum wage increase to $15/hour. I asked him his reasoning, and he said that a higher minimum wage would hurt the small business he works for (part time, at minimum wage), and that he is hopeful about becoming a part-owner one day. I tried to talk to him rationally about voting in his own self-interest, but my head was about to explode so Im not sure how successful I was. I dont think its remotely realistic that hes ever going to become part-owner of the business, but I didnt know how to communicate that without being mean or condescending. He is willing to read something article-length, but he gets discouraged by academic language. A cartoon strip would be great. A video would be even better. An animated video would be best (he loved this video, for example). Any recommendations to help him think about owner-worker relations under capitalism? Especially great is anything that specifically addresses how small businesses can exploit workers by creating undue feelings of allegiance. submitted by sasurvivor[link] [4 comments] [Forwarded by the MyLeftBlogosphere news engine.
