Videos of the #icebucketchallenge look fun. I almost did it over the weekend. Like you, I really want there to be a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. However, heres the problem with this campaign. The ALS Association reports that they have taken in over it had received $15.6 million in donations compared to $1.8 million during the same time period in the prior year. Last year, the ALS Association reported gave $500,000 to Northeast ALS Consortium (NEALS), the largest association of ALS clinical researchers in the world. We should be outraged that they are researching and destroying human fetuses, which by the way, is not working and helping those with ALS. Perhaps anybody who has done the ice bucket challenge and already made a donation could also write another letter pleading for them to stop funding embryonic stem research. Or you could go and and make another donation to a smaller organization that is not funding the destruction of human embryos but wants to find a cure for ALS. The NEALS website states, These stem cells have been engineered from the spinal cord of a single fetus electively aborted after eight weeks of gestation. The tissue was obtained with the mother’s consent. What about the fetuss consent? That little child will not have the chance to do the ice bucket challenge.
