View From The Front Porch-Stan Hitchcock Our Deshea Creek, gentle and peaceful, as it meanders on down to the Cumberland, to empty into the Ohio River, and then into the Mississippi and on down to the Gulf Of Mexico. Just a simple, quiet creek that runs along in front of the Porch of the Old Farm House. But, it used to be a bloody and dangerous creek 200 years ago...when the first settlers were struggling to hold on to the little foothold they had on the Wilderness. In the years of the closing of the 1700s, when the Indians were fighting so hard to prevent the White men from building their homes and raising their families in this far outpost of civilization, many lost their lives in the process. In the 1790s, the Desha family (they spelled it without the ea)had settled along this creek, and one day two of the sons, about 10 and 12 years old, were walking along the creek, exploring like young boys will, when some Renegade Indians leaped from the tall cane that grew along this creek, and chased the boys down and killed them, scalping them and leaving them lie. It was such a blow to the family that part of the family moved out and resettled in Kentucky. As much as we enjoy the creek, today, I always remember that a terrible price was paid for settling this land, when it was no more than a wilderness. So, Deshas Creek (as I like to call it) chuckles on down to the Cumberland River, peaceful and gentle.....stan
