Vile comes through weekend in tip-top shape Gary Vile could have been forgiving for nursing a Group One hangover after the greatest day of his training career, but he had his pride and joy Ransomed to thank for a clear head. The Awapuni horseman’s celebrations were toned down after experiencing his first Group One victory in Saturday’s The Turks Spring Classic at Hastings. “By the time we got the horse home and put him to bed it was 10 o’clock so we just had a couple of beers and then got up and watched the rugby,” Vile said. The All Blacks memorable defeat of the Springboks continued the winning theme for Vile, who on Monday was still struggling for the right words to describe the satisfaction he got from Ransomed’s performance. “It’s a big thrill to get my first Group One and I can’t explain the feeling,” he said. “I know Nashville might not have had the best run and Survived was caught three wide, but Ransomed has had his share of bad luck in the past as well and that’s the way racing goes. “He’s a big, strong horse and I rate him a very good horse and I know he only won country cups last time, but he did win them with a lot of authority. “His run in the Auckland Cup (when eighth) was huge as well and he was the only horse finishing on after he got so far back. “We were never going to change his pattern of racing at Hastings and he likes to be ridden cold.” Executing the pre-race tactics to perfection was the Waverley-based jockey Johnathon Parkes, who was also rewarded with his first Group One success. Vile began his training career in New Plymouth after finishing a farrier’s apprenticeship and struck gold early with the champion two-year-old Noble Times, who was subsequently sold to the United States. “She was the second horse I trained on my own and to get a filly that good was unbelievable,” he said. Vile later moved his operation to Awapuni where the winners, and deals, continued to flow. “Sounds Fair (Seddon, Waikato, Wellington Hurdles) was a great jumper and I’ve had a couple of good sprinters in Monarch Prince and Present Arms, who won a Stewards, and then there was All Square and he was a good horse,” he said. “I’ve also sold a huge amount of horses and that’s the only reason I’m still here.” – NZ Racing Desk.
