Violence mars Jigawa Assembly by-election, 21 September 2013 Several people were injured in Sankara town in Ringim local government area of Jigawa state yesterday when thugs allegedly sponsored by PDP attacked polling stations, carting away ballot boxes and smashing vehicles during the conduct of by-election for a state assembly seat.Trouble broke out in the morning in Kafin Barbushe when an All Progressive Congress (APC) polling agent, Malam Garb Malam-madori, was allegedly stabbed by a thug after he accused PDP agents of attempting to rig at the polling unit. The election, which started peacefully in most of the polling units was, however, marred by the reported violence in Sankara, the hometown of APC’s candidate for the by- election, Aminu Sankara, as well as the Senator Danladi Sankara of the PDP. At ward ‘A’ polling unit, trouble started in the polling unit when it became obvious that Senator Sankara was going to lose in his ward “Everything was going on smoothly until around 3pm when the mood of the voters clearly showed that the APC candidate who is from the village is going to win. Before we knew what was happening, thugs imported from Kano by the senator descended on the polling unit and started beating people with clubs and stabbing those not so lucky to run fast. They took all the ballot boxes and vandalized the classroom containing INEC materials. They also vandalized Farouk Adamu Aliyu’s car,” A resident from Sankara, said that their wives were still in the bush as at the time of filling this report. “We are tired of election in Sankara. In 2011, we and our families slept in the bush. Today again, our wives are in the bush. We leave everything in to Allah. We in Sanakara will not vote again. We have counted 18 buses full of thugs coming into Sankara since Thursday. We reported to the police but they did nothing about it,”
