Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is not just your average - TopicsExpress

Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli is not just your average anti-environment legislator. He is like the Lex Luthor to climate scientists’ Superman. He is the Khan to the EPA’s Captain Kirk. It wasn’t enough for Ken Cuccinelli to just deny that carbon pollution is fueling climate change. He sued the EPA for reaching the science-based conclusion that climate change is a threat to public health that must be addressed. He even led a witch hunt against a respected climate scientist to try to prove that global warming is a conspiracy. And now, he’s trying to take control of one of the most politically important states in our country -- running against environmental champion Terry McAuliffe in a race to become Virginia’s next governor. The outcome of this race could affect the entire country. Think about it -- in 2012, Virginia was one of just a handful of swing states that decided who won and who lost the presidency. And the governor can influence some critical election rules -- from who gets to count the ballots to who supplies voting machines to whether people have to show ID at their polling places. On the other hand, we have the opportunity to elect Terry McAuliffe, who is a dedicated advocate for clean energy, energy efficiency, and protecting Virginia’s open spaces. McAuliffe has been an outspoken critic of attempts to gut the Clean Air Act, open the Arctic Refuge for drilling, and provide taxpayer-funded handouts to Big Oil, and we can count on him to stand up for our environmental values. In fact, he has already made climate change a top issue in this race by running an ad that defends climate science and points out that Cuccinelli is a climate change denier. In a coastal state like Virginia, which faces the threat of sea level rise and increasingly intense storms as a result of climate change, we need someone who will set an example for the nation on how to address climate change. We need a leader who will use the science to prepare and protect their constituents -- not a Koch brothers-backed politician who doesn’t even think that carbon pollution is a problem. -League of Conservation Voters
