Visit of the Malian government, and violent repression against women in Kidal Sunday, September 15, 2013 9:20 p.m. National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad ° ° ° ° ° ° ° ° ° MNLA Unity - Freedom - Justice Visit Malian government and violent repression against women in Kidal Today, Sunday, September 15, 2013, a Malian government delegation, composed of two ministers, went to Kidal without telling the MNLA beforehand, and without having prepared the civilian population for this visit. However, given the liabilities of the painful Malian presence in the territory of Azawad, everyone knows that the mere mention of a return of Malian presence triggers a panic among the civilian population. The population of Kidal, which has not failed to show its strong disagreement with any Malian presence throughout these past months, in almost daily events, reacted to this unexpected visit by a huge demonstration that paralyzed the city for much of the day. The event, which included mostly women and adolescents, was violently repressed, including the use of tear gas and rubber bullets. The MNLA is outraged that use is made of such violence against women and adolescents in Azawad for exercising their inalienable right to peacefully protest their views on topics that concern their survival and future. The MNLA condemns the violent repression that has befallen the civilian population of Kidal, which made numerous injuries among women and adolescents. On the other hand, the MNLA recalls that until an agreement has been reached with the Malian government on a real special legal and political status for Azawad, Malian government officials are not welcome and can in no case take action in conquered territory and ignore the presence of the MNLA and populations of Azawad. While the Malian authorities continue to trample the Ouagadougou framework agreement at the same time, they falsely claim to be willing to engage in discussions with people who continue to be the scapegoats of the regular army as its militias. To be credible, the Malian authorities should give actions to their words, especially since nothing in the shared past of Azawad and Malian authorities allows any climate of serenity. Finally, MNLA forces solemnly call for MINUSMA and Serval engaged in ensuring compliance with international agreements Ouagadougou, to protect civilians against violence which might be committed against them, and to ensure that people of Azawad have the freedom to demonstrate freely without suffering ferocious repression.
