Viva Frida!! Yuyi Morales explains in her afterward that Frida Kahlo’s work was “proud and unafraid” and “it introduced the world to a side of Mexican culture that had been hidden from view.” Many saw surreal elements in her work, but she dismissed these observations, since she painted what he felt and saw around her. Morales’ child-friendly interpretation of Kahlo’s art through the medium of puppets and acrylic paints is all-to-real and life affirming. It is rightly a frontrunner for Caldecott attention.
