Vocal Tech Tip: the evil villain named phlegm(cue darth vader theme song...) Phlegm is the bane of most singers existence. It makes it difficult to sing because this mucus sits in and around your vocal fold area, causing rumbles, scratchiness, and all sorts of singing difficulty. It can come from a variety of sources including allergies and the dreaded acid reflux. Try to hydrate using water. Drink a minimum of 6-8 8oz glasses a day. Eliminate or significantly reduce dairy. Use a vaporizer to steam your chords. Suck on lozenges that do not have an analgesic in them or even a lollipop. You can and should practice through it as commonly you can work through and around it. But most important, if this is a chronic condition, goto your doctor, most likely an ENT(ear, nose, and throat) to check and see what is actually going on in your larynx. That doctor can also check or prescribe you medications to see if they will help or hurt your singing by causing excess phlegm. A naturalpathic physician can also help especially with lifestyle choices. Phlegm can be tamed, but is rarely ever eradicated. Luke Skywalker would never get to be a hero without Darth Vader. I bet the Emperor had a killer case of chronic phlegm to sound all evil like that....
