Volunteers – where would we be without them? We’ve recognised the tireless work of our army of volunteers by hosting a special event at the Aberavon Beach Hotel. Volunteers provide an invaluable service in hospitals and other centres in Swansea, Neath Port Talbot and Bridgend. Around 140 of them, representing the almost 500 people now volunteering with the health board, attended the inaugural thank-you event ABMU Chairman Andrew Davies paid tribute to the volunteers. “Without their invaluable work, we wouldn’t be able to deliver the services that we do,” he said. “Our volunteers help patients, their families and their friends through often very difficult times. “We hope this is going to be an annual event by which we as a health board can say a very big thank you to all our volunteers.” Among the guests was Anne-Marie Winslade, who lives in Llantwit Major and started volunteering at Princess of Wales Hospital, where she helps run the information desk, 15 years ago. She said: “The hospital has served my family for quite some years and so it’s a way of giving back. “I enjoy meeting the public and hopefully make somebody’s experience in the hospital a little less stressful. “It does wonders for your self-esteem when somebody thanks you – and they do that most often.” For Annette Francis, being a maternity ward volunteer in Singleton Hospital is a dream come true. Annette, of Llansamlet in Swansea, started three months ago but enjoys it so much she is now planning to train for a career there. “It has given me a big chance and I’m very proud and privileged to be given this position,” she said.
