The British stays on an island, literally, but taking aggressive advantage and challenging the status quo, they started expanding their empire. The British are very little concerned of who was where first. As long as they can have the last economical say of such. Every little economic value is either shipped back to London or linked for years to the British crown. Modern history does not fully appreciate the deliberate sacrifice of Britain in building its empire. Yes, we today speak against colonialism and imperialism. Britain sent soldiers to the most remote places in the expansion of their empire. Soldiers, civilians, administrative people, architects, lawyers, you name them, they all sacrificed to travel and go stay in foreign places enduring foreign challenges in building such empire. Some lost their lives. Others lost their family. Some lost their status and fame. Some sacrificed material possessions. Many soldiers lost their lives in South Africa. Yet, they made sacrifices for their posterity. Compare World War II even and see how the British took initiative. The British were successful in much they did, but there were also instances where they made blunders. In the latter, they showed their real cleverness as they soon realised their mistakes and decided to follow anther route, plan better, side with better alliances, took better options. For instance, soonest they realised the problem of slavery and how in fact they could have former slaves aligned to their course, they started propagating against slavery. They didn’t wait on the church to amend things; they allowed the ‘heathen’ abolitionists to start the course of working towards the permanent abolition of slavery.
