Vote "No" To Consolidate The Fort Myers Police Department 4 hours ago near Fort Myers In November’s general election the citizens of Fort Myers will be asked to vote on a referendum created by a political action committee known as “Find a Better Way for Lee County”. The referendum suggests that the taxpayers in the city of Fort Myers will save approximately $25 million annually if the Fort Myers Police Department is eliminated and jurisdiction turned over to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. The cost-reduction argument is not based on facts and people were misled into signing the proposed referendum. Consider this, how will the City of Fort Myers pay for the continued cost of pensions if no one is contributing to those very pensions? Fact is that a large governing body with a number of individuals who are elected from Lee County will be deciding on what services the residents of Fort Myers will receive. Thus, the level of service that is currently being provided will be reduced due mostly to the decreased number of officers and to the loss of the personal nature of policing. The political action group claims that it aims to reduce crime yet eliminating officers will not reduce crime. Do you want to wait for a deputy to respond from Lehigh Acres in the event of an emergency? This is more than dollars and cents it’s about people and about the community. Please educate yourself with the facts and help us to defeat this referendum that is simply based on political agendas rather than what is best for the citizens of Fort Myers. For the sake of the residents and the police department personnel who have committed their lives for the safety of the City, please vote NO to a consolidation.
