Voted, and ate the obligatory meat offering to the ancient god of liars, with onion and sauce. This time round I threw away all of the years of preconditioning and rhetoric. I decided Id ignore the published lies, er I mean policies, and make a decision that would be right for me. My criteria include: - do I know what you stand for and believe in? if all I know about your beliefs is that you publish a party line statement on your web site, I score you zero. - do I have a view of your potential future performance based on previous performance in the role? if no, score zero, if yes and I dont like it, score zero, if yes and I like it, score ten - do I believe, based on your previous performance or current public presence, that you are in politics for yourself, for example to create a career position which you will defend for its own sake? if yes, score zero. - do I believe, based on your previous performance or current public presence, that you are in politics to serve the needs of others, and would make broad policy decisions based on a moral and ethical position of service to the needs of others? if yes, score 10. I also threw away the notion that I must vote for a major party to keep another major party out. while I see the merit of this argument, I believe that in the long term it is self defeating. It allows and even encourages followership politics, poll-driven parties which are easily swayed by money and vested interests. What is needed is for someone to push the full flush button on such alleged political operatives. Making a statement to that effect by the voting choice will, in all likelihood, either result in a better political representative, or cast a warning to the incumbents that their performance is not acceptable. Voting against someone by selecting a less bad but still rotten choice simply prolongs the period of decay, and ultimately keeps good people out of politics.
