Voting rules for nomination still allow northerners to have an influence in who is the party front runner - giving the GOP George Bush Senior, John McCain (raised inside the beltway) and Mitt Romney the nomination. If the south really controlled the nomination Gingrich would have won last time and Huckabee the time before. Northern Republicans and the party establishment considered both unelectable - although Huck sat this one out (as did Wes Clark on the Democratic side) because neither wanted to see the specter of a southern man running against the first black President. What the southern factor does do is make all candidates pander to their causes, no matter where they are from (while not actually delivering once elected). 2016 has already started with many going to Iowa. Santorum is there - but since he had one of the worst campaigns ever waged the chance he will win the nomination is slim. Huckabee might actually be a strong front runner this time. The jocular Huckabee debating the uptight Mrs. Clinton may turn 2016 into a closer race than people think.
