W game: Amin Matalqa assigned me age 38. How coincidental that this was a time of huge upheaval and transition. Where I lived: Los Angeles, CA. What I did: In 1992 I had 15 years under my belt as a professional musician, musical director, arranger and orchestrator. By this time I had been married and divorced, fathered a son, worked incessantly while being a single parent. I was working at a very high level but it wasn’t really right for me. There was something more I was looking for and wasn’t quite sure what it was. I had always fantasized about how my life could be different but couldn’t release the grip of my dysfunctional past.On my birthday, April 29th, 1992 my son and I were at Dodger Stadium as the LA riots broke out as a result of the Rodney King trial. This had a major impact on me emotionally. At the time I was looking to buy a house and contemplated making a move to the suburbs. To make a long story short I realized that I should stay in my neighborhood and make a difference. Even though it was less than a mile away from “The DMZ” (as the Oakwood section of Venice was known at the time) I saw that if I wanted to make a difference in the world I could do it wherever I happened to be if I engaged and participated. Running away wouldn’t change anything. I stayed in the same neighborhood for 17 years. Raised my son who went on to play baseball for Yale, graduate with honors from Loyola Law school and is now happily married and working in Santa Monica. I can only imagine what my life would have been like had I not faced my fears and conditioning and ran to a “safer environment”. who had my heart: Obviously my son. But 1992 was also the year I met my wife Michele. Without her love and support I would have never had the strength to change careers and move from orchestration to composing my own film scores. It’s been a great run. Thank you Michele. Age now: 59 Where I live: Nashville/Miami What I drive: BMW 328i What I do: Professor at Frost School of Music/University of Miami Who has my heart: Obviously my wife, son and daughter-in-law but also the many students I work with in my program. Each and everyone of them is special. I am grateful to have the opportunity to share a lifetime of experience with such a deserving, diverse group.
