WAAO- Thursday, Jan. 1/16/14 - 1:15 a.m. ATTENTION RESIDENTS OF DOWNTOWN GANTT: Covington County Sheriffs Deputies, in conjunction with Gantt Fire, River Falls Fire, and Southeast Alabama Gas District employees are currently responding and are on scene of what they have described as a natural gas leak that occurred around 1 a.m. Thursday near the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 29 North & Central St. Point A Road. Officials report a loud explosion was felt and heard by nearby residents at a natural gas distribution point behind a chain-link fenced area near the former Grissetts Grocery. A deputy on scene reported to 911 operators and fire fighters the explosion was so hard the gates of the fence had been blown off the hinges of the enclosure. At this time, area fire fighters are going doot to door asking all nearby residents to evacuate their homes to ensure safety of all. Please help notify any friends and neighbors in this immediate area and encourage them to evacuate at this time. Deputies report a heavy heavy smell of natural gas at this time and say it sounds as if a pop-off valve has opened and is leaking natural gas. S.E.A.G.D officials have been notified and are responding at this time. All traffic is being diverted away from this area by law enforcement officials. Please avoid this area at this time. We will report further information as soon as possible.
