WARM TODAY, NOT BAD TOMORROW, BUT POLAR BLAST DRAWING CLOSER Good evening everyone! Well how about today for a near perfect winters day. The temperatures rose to 18deg, with fresh NE winds and clear skies. However, that is all about to change as a bitter polar blast works its way up from very south. We have a reasonably calm day tomorrow to get through, before the action kicks off on Wednesday afternoon. Expect highs of 14deg with mainly clear skies. Winds will almost be non-existent with a shower or two possible in the afternoon. POLAR BLAST Well, believe it or not, the models are still changing, meaning that forecasting this event, is like trying to get blood out of a stone. Today models are showing more of a SW flow, which of course means less moisture for us. Although only some models are saying that, some are still showing a direct southerly which is favourable for more moisture. Based on current models we can say: • Expect rain or showers to develop during Wednesday afternoon throughout the region, with snow initially falling to 400m. • Temperatures will stay below 7deg for both Wednesday and Thursday. • Overnight Wednesday and into Thursday, snow could lower to 200m, possibly lower. • At this stage activity is likely to be coastal, but that may change still. • Ski fields will get minimum snow… with a slight dusting likely. • Air later on in the week looks much colder, but very little moisture is involved. We advise that Wednesday night could see some significant snow on Banks Peninsula, and the top of the Port Hills. The snow level could well drop further, so hopefully in the next few hours we see some consistency in the models. For now, have a good night, rug up warm, keep up to date on here for the latest. Russell will be back in the morning. -Josh
