WARNING: Another Scottish Independence post The major flaw in the whole referendum debate for me is approach of the No campaign. I continually found myself in favour of the campaign, but against the campaigners. Even the most basic understanding of Scottish psychology would suggest intimidation is not likely to produce the desired response. Also the focus on how bad separation would be for Scotland, when the truth is that it will be apocalyptically bad for the whole of the UK, as we’re now beginning to see. Essentially the UK will resign from the global top table. With Scotland separated, the remaining UK will no longer have the financial and military heft to maintain it’s already fragile position alongside USA, Russia, China, Germany, Japan, et al. We haven’t always conducted ourselves well at the top table, but at least we can agree being there is better than not. After all, do we trust the countries remaining at the top table to have our best interests highest in their priorities? Additionally, regardless of your view on the debate, we can all agree that uncertainty is never good for financial markets or international relations. So post September 18th we have an independent Scotland (as seems likely) * What is the nature of the currency arrangement between them and the UK? (is it still called the UK? not what does UKIP call itself?) * What is the debt & asset structure between England & Scotland * What is new tax regime for the country, do businesses like it or not? * Does the UK election take place in May 2015, in the knowledge that the Scottish MPs will depart in 2016 (so essentially a lame duck government) * How does it impact Wales, Northern Ireland, and North of England? * Where does the UK & US house it’s nuclear arsenal and what is the cost & feasibility of occupying * How does this impact the EU? * Will Cameron be deposed as leader? (Boris’s timing could not be better) I know there are views on the above, but nobody knows as it involves a negotiation to be finalised. Putting yourself in the position of an outside investor/partner of the UK how would you feel? The referendum will give Scotland freedom from Westminister, but the actual price is the UK’s submission to the power of Washington, Moscow, Berlin and Beijing.
