***WARNING LONG READ*** Last night I attended Applegrove CC Ward 32 All Candidates Meeting (so you all didnt have to, thank me later), and thought I would try to give anyone interested a recap. The crowd was not very large, and pretty obviously 90% of the crowd was already committed to one of the candidates. Ill go over my initial impressions of them. The only ones I had seen in action before were Mary-Margaret McMahon and Sandra Bussin, so it was an eye opening experience :) In order of appearance Alan Burke - Seemed well spoken on the issues, if a little odd and ill-advised. No one asked, but he offered up the fact he does not live in the Ward, and mentioned the address of his Campaign Office, which also happened to not be in the Ward. Not a big deal, just seemed a little odd that he was so fixated on that. He is apparently the head of his local residents association, and has paid for port-a-potties at Ashbridges Bay out of his own pocket (TMI, but ok Alan) Sandra Bussin - Sandra does know many of the local issues, but she just seemed uninterested and defeated. Most of her answers did not actually have anything to do with the questions asked, and usually she just seemed like an old man yelling at some kids to get off his lawn. Even the crowd picked up on this and were openly laughing at her when she made blatantly untrue statements. Maria Garcia - She was a bundle of energy. She seems genuine and happy, but sadly also seems to not have much of a clue about what was happening last night. She rambled about her vast multi-national social media network on Pinterest and all of the American and Europeans that she would be getting to vote in this election. I am not really sure what else to say about her.. Carmel Suttor - Very passionate about the issues she cares about. She talked at length about poverty, social housing and environmental issues. Well versed and civil towards all the other candidates. Perhaps mentioning that it is obvious that the incumbent will win the election is a bit odd, but she was a pleasant surprise. Mary-Margaret McMahon - Was solid and stayed above the fray. Most of the night almost all of the candidates (Alan/Maria/Carmel excepted) the other candidates were attacking her and calling her names, but she did not take the bait and was articulate and stayed on her message. You dont have to agree with her, but you cant say that you dont know what you are getting with her. James Sears - What a piece of work. As expected he is a piece of trash. He ranted about Straight Pride Parades, pulling his penis out in public, how women are all sluts and need to be brought to heel, and being the only Anti-Marxist candidate in the field. Lots of F-Bombs (with kids in the crowd), and on and on. Piece of trash. Brian Graff - Brian was well spoken enough, it was just too bad he didnt actually mention anything about himself. He just spent pretty much the entire evening ranting about Mary-Margaret. His entire closing remarks he didnt mention his name once, didnt ask for anyones vote. All he did was froth at the mouth about MMM. Eric de Boer - Well spoken and passionate about the things he believes in, its just that those things are not very tenable, and would have little to no support if he were ever to actually make it to council. A crazy ranting man who made a fairly dubious claim (he would have been around 5 yrs old) to have fought in the war also made an appearance to call Mary whatever your name is an asshole and wave his cane around like a wildman. All in all if was a circus. The moderator lost control and never really regained it. The format was terrible and all of the fringe candidates took advantage.
