WARREN ANDERSON DIES: I somehow missed the news that Anderson has died at the age of 92. As CEO of US-based Union Carbide during the Bhopal gas disaster, he was the most vilified business executive in India and the world. A paperweight on his desk used to say, Leader is best when people barely know he exists. His life would end up being the opposite of that idea. Below are two items that you may want to read. And I would love to hear your thoughts. In case you are too young to have known about the Bhopal incident, then please consider reading the Wikipedia background article, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhopal_disaster 1. NYT obit of Anderson, which has a good overview of this fascinating tale (and has that paperweight quote above): nytimes/2014/10/31/business/w-m-anderson-92-dies-led-union-carbide-in-80s-.html 2. A 2002 report in Rediff (mentioned in the NYT obit) by the late Shakti Bhatt in which she tracked down Anderson to his Hamptons home - a man both the US and Indian governments claimed they couldnt find: rediff/news/special/rewind-finding-bhopal-gas-tragedys-warren-anderson/20141031.htm This was the young reporters biggest scoop. She would die of a sudden illness five years later. Now Andersons death gives me an excuse to mention her. BTW, the Shakti Bhatt Foundation gives out an annual prize to encourage young authors in India. Here is this years short list - very interesting in itself (winner announced in Nov): forshakti.blogspot/2014/09/the-shakti-bhatt-first-book-prize-2014.html | Our friend Arun Venugopal wrote a piece in 2004 announcing her death in SAJAforum: sajaforum.org/2007/04/obit_shakti_bha.html | Your thoughts welcome.
